Since  the beginning of the lockdown, it’s been widely reported that some local authorities have suspended green bin and garden waste collections so as to prioritise medical waste and food waste collections.  But it’s been revealed that some local authorities have continued to accumulate household recycling just to then send it to be incinerated. The protector reported that several local councils were trimming recycling in response to this enormous domestic waste requirement as a consequence of the coronavirus lockdown and the covid-19-related staff absences.  

Recycling Paused Due To Lockdown 

A recent poll completed by the institution of directors of environment, economy, preparation and transport (skilful ) reported that 250 neighbourhood councils have experienced losing around 40 percent of the waste collection staff due to self-isolation and illness in the last week. With households being restricted to their own houses, a third of local authorities reported that domestic refuse has risen in volume by between 20% and 50%.  Additionally, the mounting strain on local waste sets has no doubt been exacerbated with the final of local authority household recycling centres and tips. As a result, Cardiff, St Helens and Inverclyde councils have resorted to incinerating recycling instead of sorted and transferred for reuse.  Oldham, Redbridge and West Dunbartonshire local authorities also reported they have scaled back their recycling operations for now, with a further six authorities temporarily stopping glass and cardboard collections. 

Regardless, Cardiff city council requested that households continue to wash and organise their recyclable items as normal, in the assurance that operations will return to normal when staffing allows.  Meanwhile, tips and recycling centres in greater Manchester reopened this weekend, however, are one of the few in the nation, meaning it will still be some time before recycling operations return to normal as well as the strain on waste collection teams is eased.
